JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia - Wednesday’s flash floods in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia surprised many, including overseas Filipino workers (OFW) based here.
“Nakakapagtaka, grabe," said Jeddah-based OFW, Mohammad Aquil Tiburon.
Online news provider Arab News reported that the death toll in the Jeddah floods reached 77.
The heavy downpour caused massive flooding in Jeddah. The floods damaged houses and other properties. Cars stalled and were eventually submerged in flood waters. People who were stranded for several hours took refuge inside buildings.
ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau reported that it was Jeddah’s first time to experience a heavy downpour that caused floods.
The OFWs, however, were relieved that students are on vacation and were at home when flood waters rose.
Meanwhile, John Leonard Monterona, regional coordinator of Migrante-Middle East, urged Filipino pilgrims in Saudi Arabia to be careful.
“What is good, wala namang reported OFWs na namatay dahil sa baha. Marami pa namang pilgrims now dahil sa Eid Al-Adha holidays going to Madinah, 1,000 km from Jeddah City. Thus, we are calling all Filipino pilgrims to take extra care,” Monterona said. Report from Charles Tabbu, ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau, Jeddah
